I said I was just checking in, didn't have any traffic, and I thanked KC5AGO because he was working overtime as net control. He then came back to me, mentioning that there was some noise on my signal but he had 100% copy on me.
I had no idea why there'd be noise on my signal, but didn't think too much of it. Next I went to turn my transmit power down so that I could retune my antenna (a small, transmitting loop tuned with a big variable capacitor). I was shocked when I saw that the power didn't need to be turned down...it was already down as low as it goes, on 5 watts! I guess that accounts for the noise on my signal, and I got a kick out of the fact that he KC5AGO could understand me at all with just 5 watts. He is in Texas and I'm in Brooklyn, NY. Guess I was QRP without even knowing it. | | | Post Reply | Display replies to this message

While I know you enjoy it, it also shows a great deal of hard work and dedication. The tools continue to be valuable every single week of the year.

1 - Silence périod 00 to 03 every hour on the 14300 khz to received and transmitt emergency messages.. 2 - No QSO only emergency call and traffic on 14300 khz. 3 - When an ham-radio station is calling on 14300 khz he has to be clear the frequency. The ham-radio network on duty or other network on 14300 khz has to give to him another frequency to conduct the QSO or TRAFFIC. O. MARSAN F6DGU AMARAD France WWW.AMARAD.ORG 8/24/2007

| | Date: | Mon 21 May 2007 03:38:15 PM EDT | | Subject: | new to ham, new to 14300KHz, but "old" to sailboats | | | My daughter is graduating from HS this Summer, and she caught the sailing bug early in her life. Weather permitting, she and I will be sailing from Huntington, NY to Bermuda the end of June (I have done it before, it'll be her fist time). As a new ham radio operator (KC2 ONO)with a Yaesu 817ND (5W power, only), I have been able to listen in on 14300KHZ with mixed results, but I have not been able to establish any connection. The antenna tuner says the antenna is tunes sufficiently well (1:2 or better), so I assume it has to do with power. I intend to get a Yaesu 857 or Icom 706 MKIIG for the boat, which have 100W. Can anybody give me any suggestions?
Sincerely %26 73
